Awkward Donald Trump-Mike Pence ’60 Minutes’ Interview Dominates Morning’s RNC Coverage

With no big stars set to appear at the opening day of the Republican National Convention, TV news operations this morning were hugely focused on last night’s 60 Minutes interview with presumptive nominee Donald Trump and his newly named running mate Mike Pence from their gold-leaf thrones in Trump Tower.

Wannabe First Lady Melania Trump and Iowa Sen. Jodi “Make ‘Em Squeal” Ernst are today’s speechifying headliners. Trump’s campaign manager has insisted the lack of celebrity stink is deliberate – no Hollywood A-listers, Bush family members, or even Ohio Gov. John Kasich – because this convention is a family affair. It will instead include speeches by Trump’s daughter Ivanka, adult sons, the head of the Trump winery and other employees (as well as Scott Baio and Antonia Sabato Jr.).

MSNBC contributor Mike Barnicle has bet Trump’s favorite caddie will introduce the candidate on Thursday. “It’s not that they’re thumbing their nose at the convention; it’s that they can’ t get anybody,” Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinski insisted this morning.
