You can now buy a cake version of the classic Custard Cream biscuit, thanks to the good people at ASDA.

The cake serves 16 people and looks just like the iconic biscuit, with its fancy baroque design.

Best of all, it’s only £8.

Like the classic teatime snack, it incorporates a vanilla buttercream filling, which is the same ingredient shop-bought custard cream biscuits were filled with when they were first released in 1908.

While many continue to make their own custard creams with buttermilk, biscuit manufacturers generally use different fats nowadays in the biscuits – including the ASDA version – meaning the cake might be closer to the “original” custard cream. We’ll take it.

Needless to say, custard cream fans are delighted.

Not everyone was impressed, however, with calls for a different biscuit to be made into a cake instead, while another person speculated the cake might taste “sickly”.

While the custard cream cake is sure to prove a winner among ASDA customers, it is worth mentioning the biscuit has dropped in popularity in the all-important Great British biscuit rankings.

In 2007, more than nine in 10 ranked it their favourite – but it recently failed to make it into the top five in a YouGov poll.

Meanwhile, one survey found your biscuit choice can say a lot about your background – for instance, a love of fig rolls suggests you might be a northerner.
