Armie Hammer distances himself from Green Lantern casting rumours
Following speculation that Armie Hammer might be in line to appear as DC superhero Green Lantern, the actor has addressed the matter, bluntly dismissing it all as pure fan talk.
Many fans were surprised when the officially announced cast of the upcoming ‘Justice League’ movie – starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and of course Henry Cavill as Superman – did not also include Green Lantern, long held as a key member of DC’s superhero super-team. Early teaser posters bearing the tagline ‘assemble the seven’ certainly implied the character would appear (do the math).
However, it has since been rumoured that a Green Lantern will indeed make an appearance in ‘Justice League,’ with ‘The Lone Ranger’ and ‘The Man From UNCLE’ actor Hammer hotly tipped to take over from Ryan Reynolds (star of the ill-fated 2011 ‘Green Lantern’ movie) in the role of Hal Jordan.
Hammer (who came close to playing Batman in George Miller’s aborted 2009 movie ‘Justice League: Mortal’) has long played coy on the matter, and now insists to Collider that there’s no truth to these reports.
“Man, jeez… It was fun for a while and now I’m convinced that everyone’s gonna turn on me so I’m like ‘Oh s**t, slowly backing away’… I have nothing to confirm nor deny. The only talk of me being Green Lantern that I have heard in my life has only come from social media.”
Sounds pretty final – but then again, fans with long memories will recall similar sentiments expressed by actors linked to superhero roles before the news was made public, including Jason Momoa prior to being revealed as Aquaman, and Paul Rudd before being revealed as Marvel’s Ant-Man.
Assuming Green Lantern does indeed make an appearance in ‘Justice League,’ it seems safe to assume that whoever has been cast will go on to reprise the role not only in the planned ‘Justice League’ sequel, but also ‘Green Lantern Corps,’ anticipated to be an intergalactic buddy movie centred on the two best-loved Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
Chris Pine was also linked to the role of Hal Jordan prior to his casting as Steve Trevor in the upcoming ‘Wonder Woman,’ whilst Dwayne Johnson had expressed interest in John Stewart before opting to play Black Adam in ‘Shazam.’
Armie Hammer can currently be seen in ‘Free Fire.’ Meanwhile, the DCEU will continue with ‘Wonder Woman,’ opening 2 June, and ‘Justice League,’ opening 17 November.
