Seafood sales hit $16.6 billion in 2020, representing a year-over-year increase of 28.4%, according to new data from the Food Industry Association (FMI).Americans found themselves eating at home more than ever because of the COVID-19 pandemic last year. Many seeking healthier choices increasingly turned to frozen, fresh, and deli seafood, the data shows. And they didn't simply settle for sardines—they indulged, according to Supermarket News. Crab and lobster saw the biggest jump, with sales rising 60.2% and 59.9% respectively. (Related: Grocery Shortages To Expect in 2021, According to Experts.)Consumers also sought out more information about how to cook and flavor the seafood they bought at marketplaces. They turned to store seafood counters, websites, and apps for guidance. And this could signal a change.“The analysis suggests an urgency for food retailers to expand their seafood programs to help sustain consumer awareness of this protein that has emerged in popularity as a result of the pandemic,” Rick Stein, the vice president of fresh foods for FMI, said of the findings. “The call to action among grocers is to focus on seafood nutrition, cooking guidance, meal ideas, and sustainability both in-store and online as ways to maintain shopper interest in seafood.”Back in mid-2020, fresh seafood was actually hard to find during shopping trips. Small fishing boats across the globe were hit hard amid the pandemic, leaving the markets they supplied uncertain. Many restaurants, hotels, and catering services also halted operations, meaning fewer businesses were purchasing fish. For some quick inspiration, here are our favorite 43 Healthy Seafood Recipes That Are Surprisingly Easy to Make. As a doctor, I know the coronavirus, COVID-19, has revealed itself to be a master of disguise. Whereas some people can have it and have no idea they are infected, others end up in the Intensive Care Unit, unable to breathe and on a ventilator, since the virus targets the lungs. So what should we look out for? What are the signs our lung function is deteriorating? Here are some points of relevance—however, if you are concerned about your clinical condition, I would urge you to seek professional help sooner rather than later, because all respiratory infections can get worse with frightening speed. You need to get help promptly before things progress too far. Read on, and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus. 1 First, Take Stock of the Severity of Your Infection If you are unlucky enough to become infected with COVID-19, the episode may last up to two weeks in mild cases, or three to six weeks in severe or critical cases. The severity of COVID-19 infection has been divided into 5 groups:AsymptomaticMild diseaseModerate diseaseSevere diseaseCritical—Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)Experience from Wuhan, where the virus originated, showed 81% of COVID-19 patients had mild disease, 14% of those infected developed severe pneumonia and around 5% required critical care. When we consider if the lungs are failing, we are specifically interested in people passing from mild and moderate disease, to severe or critical. Mild to moderate disease can be managed at home. People with severe or critical disease need hospitalization. The following are 5 symptoms/clinical signs to look out for, which will help decide if your infection is passing from moderate to critical severity, and if so, needs urgent help. 2 Your Cough is Getting Worse Up to 82% of patients infected with COVID-19 have a cough. This is typically dry and irritating. Experts describe the cough in the early stages of the disease as coughing episodes which can last up to an hour, and with 3 or more coughing bouts in 24 hours.Coughing is due to inflammation in your airways. A cough is a reflex designed to protect your body from invasion with foreign particles such as bacteria and viruses. If your lungs are inflamed, a cough also expels mucus and cellular debris. In a way, a cough is a good thing! However too much coughing is exhausting, it further interrupts the supply of oxygen to your lungs and can—although rare—cause serious problems such as fractured ribs, or even small hemorrhages in the brain. If your cough is worsening, this can be a warning sign the infection is progressing to cause a more severe, full-blown pneumonia. 3 You're Finding it Hard to Breathe Breathlessness was reported by 31% of patients from the initial experience in Wuhan. It is very frightening not being able to breathe. The degree of breathlessness is probably the most important clinical indicator of the severity of your condition.Respiratory rate – Normally adults breathe in and out 12 -18 times per minute.More than 20 breaths per minute is faster breathing—called tachypnoea.Inability to breathe interferes with normal daily activities – As the COVID-19 infection progresses, you may feel more breathless. If this is starting to interfere with daily activities, for example, you can't finish a sentence without taking a breath, or it's hard to eat or drink, this is a bad sign. In addition, you may also find it harder and harder to walk around, manage the stairs, or do your daily activities.Strain from breathing – If you watch someone with severe breathing difficulties, you will notice them using their neck muscles to draw up the chest and suck air into the lungs, and sometimes flaring of the nostrils. People with severe breathing difficulties often complain that their chest, tummy, or back hurts, due to the mechanical strain of breathing. If you have these clinical signs, you need to be getting urgent medical help as these are signs COVID-19 has passed from a moderate to a severe infection. 4 You're Super-Fatigued Fatigue was one of the most common symptoms reported from the first experience of COVID-19 in China and was reported in around 70% of patients. It’s normal to feel tired when you are unwell. However, if the tiredness becomes total fatigue, such that you can’t manage a shower, don’t want to get out of bed or get dressed, lose your appetite, or start not wanting to drink, these are signs of exhaustion. This extreme fatigue is due to a high viral load in your body. Your body is generating a huge immune response. This then results in a fever, sweating, coughing, and can lead to dehydration. Fatigue is also due to the physical exertion of trying to breathe. As the fatigue worsens, you may become listless, unable to watch TV or concentrate or communicate effectively.Other medical complications can also occur, including possible secondary bacterial infection. In the most critical cases, there may be overwhelming infection with sepsis and septic shock. If your tiredness is progressing and becoming extreme, this is a sign the coronavirus infection is becoming severe, and your pneumonia is worsening. You need to seek urgent help. 5 Your Lips are Blue If your lips, fingers and toes are looking blue, this is called cyanosis—this is a serious sign of poor lung function and you must get urgent medical help. When you breathe in, your lungs deliver oxygen to the heart and the rest of the body. The lungs also excrete carbon dioxide, in the air you breathe out. When you have severe pneumonia, such as with COVID-19 infection, your body can be lacking in oxygen, and are also unable to get rid of carbon dioxide.Well-oxygenated blood is a cherry-red color, giving your skin a nice reddish/pink tinge. However deoxygenated blood has a darker red color, and when light reflects off the skin, it now appears a dark navy blue. This bluish tinge is seen on the lips and on the tips of the fingers and toes, and in the nail beds. 6 You're Having Chest Pain This is not being widely reported as a major symptom of COVID-19, however, pneumonia of any cause can cause chest pain. If pneumonia affects the lining of the lung tissue – the pleura – it can cause pleurisy. Pleuritic chest pain is a typical pain felt in the chest when you breathe in. It is sometimes also felt in the abdomen, the neck or the shoulder. Pneumonia can also cause fluid to build up in the chest – this is called a pleural effusion.Coughing and straining the intercostal muscles (between the ribs) can cause pain. Severe coughing can cause a fractured rib, or a pneumothorax – a lung collapse.Patients do report chest tightening with COVID-19—which may be due to bronchospasm, especially in people who are known asthmatics or have a tendency to wheeze when they get a respiratory infection. 7 There's the Additional Threat of Underlying Medical Conditions COVID-19 pneumonia presents an additional threat for people who already have underlying medical conditions:Cardiovascular disease – Severe COVID-19 infection increases the strain on your heart, as it beats harder and faster due to infection, in an effort to help with oxygenation, and thwarted by dehydration and increasing resistance from trying to pump blood into diseased lung tissue. This increases the likelihood of angina, and/or a heart attack.Diabetes – Diabetic control is always disrupted in any severe acute infection and becomes difficult to manage.Chronic respiratory disease – Underlying chronic obstructive airways disease, often from smoking, means airways are already damaged and clogged with mucus and debris. Hypertension – High blood pressure is correlated with cardiovascular disease, and further puts the heart under strain.Complications can arise from COVID-19 exacerbated by any of these conditions. For example, a heart attack, secondary bacterial pneumonia or a pulmonary embolus (blood clot). All of these can cause chest pain—although they can also be silent. If you are getting worsening chest pain, this would suggest your COVID-19 is becoming more severe and you need urgent medical attention. 8 Final Thoughts From the Doctor If you think you have COVID-19 infection, the advice is to stay at home. However, this is a serious viral infection which causes pneumonia. If you feel your condition is deteriorating, you must seek help.It can be hard to judge how well or badly your lungs are coping with a COVID-19 infection. Never worry about wasting anyone’s time! Lung function can deteriorate rapidly and it is always best to act earlier rather than later. If you can identify with any of the five symptoms listed here, it’ s time to be calling your doctor. And to get through this pandemic without catching coronavirus, don’t miss this essential list: Most COVID Patients Did This Before Getting Sick.Dr. Deborah Lee is a medical writer at Dr Fox Online Pharmacy.
Does the early bird really get the worm? Or is a post-work sweat sesh the way to go? While working out at any time of the day is good for your physical and mental health, one study published by the University of Copenhagen states that exercising in the morning will "result in an increased metabolic response in skeletal muscle." In simpler terms, morning exercise can give your metabolism a boost when trying to digest sugar and fat throughout the day. Here's why, and for even more healthy tips, be sure to check out our list of 15 Underrated Weight Loss Tips That Actually Work. Why working out in the morning boosts your metabolism. The science behind this theory is specific to the body's circadian clock. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a circadian clock is the driven cycle within your body that will "rise and fall" during a 24-hour day. It's how your body responds to the sun's light and dark cycle throughout the day. Your hormonal activity, body temperature, eating and sleeping schedules all are linked to this cycle. It's also closely correlated to your melatonin levels, which helps your body to relax and fall into a deep sleep, and wake up in the morning when you're feeling refreshed. So how are these correlated? In the study, researchers used mice to determine the effect of exercise at different times of the day. As it turns out, the mice that worked out in the morning (at the beginning of the active phase, when your brain is most sharp) resulted in a higher metabolic response throughout the day, compared to working out at the beginning of the "resting phase" of your day, which starts in the evening. That's because morning exercise can initiate gene programs in your muscle cells, creating an even more effective metabolizing structure for your body.Is it bad to exercise at night?Of course not! Again, it's important to move your body and to pick a time that works well for your schedule. The published study clearly states that exercise in the evening does still increase energy expenditure hours after the exercise session, meaning you will still burn calories and get your metabolism going. The research simply shows by getting your body moving during your active part of the day (when the sun is up and your body is geared to get things done), your metabolism and muscle cells respond to that kind of energy, causing a faster metabolic response."On this basis we cannot say for certain which is best, exercise in the morning or exercise in the evening," says Jonas Thue Treebak, associate professor from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, when interviewed for the study. "At this point, we can only conclude that the effects of the two appear to differ, and we certainly have to do more work to determine the potential mechanisms for the beneficial effects of exercise training performed at these two time-points."More Exercise Stories on Eat This, Not That!25 Easy Exercises That Make You Feel BetterThe Only Ab Exercise You'll Ever NeedWhat Can Happen To Your Body If You Don't Exercise15 Exercise Mistakes That Are Ruining Your WorkoutThis One Exercise Melts Fat Faster Than Any Other, Says Science

What exactly does life after “WandaVision” like for Wanda and Vision? The penultimate episode of the series proved this week that yes, there originally was a plan for that. It just wasn’t for life after “WandaVision” – it was for life after Thanos. In the years between “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” Wanda and Vision really were planning for something resembling happily-ever-after. But after everything we saw this week, is that still even possible? After the uh, revelatory events of episode 8, “Previously On,” and with just one episode left, there are a lot of hurdles in front of them. And it sure looks like WandaVision the couple might be as not-long-for-this-earth as WandaVision the show. First and foremost, Vision’s mortality status is the big question mark. Also Read: 'WandaVision' Just Retconned the MCU in a Really Big Way As we saw late in the episode, after seeing Vision reduced to mere parts by S.W.O.R.D. researchers (more on that in a moment), Wanda says a pained goodbye to his body and leaves for Westview, New Jersey because, as it turns out, Vision bought property for them there. “To grow old in” is the final message Vision left Wanda. They had planned for a future together. That turned out to be the final straw. That’s the piece of the puzzle we’ve been looking for: How and why Wanda created the Hex. As Agatha tells her at the end, it’s pure “chaos magic,” borne out of grief for her true love. Now, obviously, per “Avengers: Endgame,” the Infinity Stones were destroyed, including the Mind Stone that essentially comprised Vision. We assumed this meant that whatever brought Westview Vision to ‘life,’ it wasn’t that. We assumed this meant that whatever brought Westview Vision to ‘life,’ it wasn’t that, which made it likely Westview Vision isn’t even really alive. But then came THAT moment in “Previously On.” You know, where Wanda’s magic basically just exploded a brand new Vision out of her? Most of it was her signature “Red Wiggly Woos,” but there was also some gold in there – which as the episode reminded us several times prior to that moment, was the gold of the Mind Stone. Wanda releases her magic (Disney/Screengrab) Despite what Hayward told Monica Rambeau, Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis a few episodes back, it turns out Wanda didn’t actually steal Vision’s corpse from S.W.O.R.D. HQ; she crafted an entirely new one on her own. And while there’s no way to know this for certain just yet, it sure looked like Wanda gave up the power of the Mind Stone to do it. Also Read: 'WandaVision': What You Need to Know About Episode 8's Insane Mid-Credits Scene So, is Vision an illusion of the Hex? Or is he a real being created by a somehow-reconstituted version of the Mind Stone? Right now we’re leaning toward some form of the latter — he has after all repeatedly demonstrated self awareness and an ability to resist Wanda’s mind control, to the extent that he can even free other residents of Westview from it. And if he’s alive, that means he could die. Again. Remember, whether he’s an illusion or real, he started disintegrating when he left the boundaries of the Hex. That presents the very real possibility that when Wanda finally brings the Westview illusion to an end, Vision will also have to go. And His (third) death would make all of this a moot point. But let’s say he does survive – where does that leave his relationship with Wanda? At the start of “WandaVision” it was clear that Vision was as enamored with his now-wife as ever, albeit a little dazedly. He clearly had questions about things — like what their life was before they moved there, or what exactly it is his employer does — but his love for Wanda? That wasn’t one of those questions. This sitcom reality gave them what they had been searching for for two years prior to Infinity War: time. Time, and peace. In Westview, Wanda and Vision could just be in love, without worrying about saving the world. Also Read: 'WandaVision': Did Marvel Just Bring Back an Infinity Stone? Obviously, things fell apart quickly. Realizing that he had no memory of his life before Westview, Vision began to investigate, before having a near full-on panic attack. “Before what? I can’t remember my life before Westview. I don’t know who I am,” Vision screams at Wanda in episode 5. Vision confronts Wanda (Disney/Screengrab) But that reality – what exactly happened to Vision before Westview – is too painful for Wanda to bear, let alone reveal to him, so she continued to keep him in the dark to preserve the reality she crafted for herself. By episode 6, Vision is outright lying to her so he can find answers himself. Looking back on what we see of their relationship in “Civil War” and “Infinity War,” Vision consistently fought to stay by Wanda’s side and always had this unshakeable faith in her – even after the Lagos incident. The closest he ever got to being cold was the moment where he tells Wanda not to become the monster they fear she is. (Ironically, her response is that she’s unable to control other people’s fear, only her own. In Westview, the opposite seems to be true). We get to see even more of this era during the flashbacks in “Previously On,” in a touching scene set shortly after the events of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” where Vision reaches out to comfort Wanda, who is still grieving the death of Pietro. Notably, they bond while watching an episode of “the Dick Van Dyke Show,” further establishing why Wanda retreated into a sitcom fantasy in the present day. Now, Vision’s core need for information combined with Wanda’s refusal to ever talk about her grief (which apparently has been a thing since she and Vision began connecting in that flashback) has created a disconnect. That gap is only thrown in sharper relief when he literally says in episode 7 that he feels bad about what he and Wanda have apparently gone through, but it feels like it happened to someone else. And that disconnect is starting to go both ways. Though Wanda saves her husband by expanding the borders of the Hex, she tells her sons the next morning that she can’t control if Vision wants to be home with them, so they shouldn’t worry so much about where he is. Obviously, this is a manifestation of Wanda’s depression; she clearly cares very much that her husband is avoiding her, she just hasn’t found an appropriate way to cope. And really, Vision still cares very much about her. In episode 7, he abruptly stops his “interview” to go to Wanda, bewilderedly saying “What am I doing… I have to get back to my wife.” As Darcy Lewis tells Vision in episode 7, the love he and Wanda have for each other is real. This week, we even got to see its origins, with the memory of Wanda and Vision bonding over her sitcoms triggering her to reveal her journey to S.W.O.R.D. headquarters to retrieve Vision’s body. Wanda and Vision’s relationship was always one of the more tumultuous relationships in Marvel lore. Even in the comics, they had their ups and downs. Their ups and downs are just…more super than most couples. And in that respect, “WandaVision” has faithfully served its source material. Assuming someone finds a way to keep Vision functioning outside the Hex, he and Wanda are going to have a lot of work ahead if they want to rebuild. Some serious couple’s therapy may be in order. Just because the COVID-19 vaccine is here and people are lining up to get it, doesn’t mean that the restrictions imposed during the pandemic are ready to be lifted, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). At Friday’s White House COVID-19 Response Team Briefing, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Director of the CDC, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Andy Slavitt, White House senior advisor on the COVID-19 response, explained why. Read on to find out what they had to say—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus. The CDC Chief Says Now is Not the Time to Lift Restrictions“Given the trends that we've seen in just the last couple of days, we can't be in a place where we're lifting restrictions right now,” Dr. Walensky said. “I would really encourage people, the CDC would really encourage people and States to not expand and release restrictions.”Fauci agreed. “We understand there is a tendency given that the deflection of the curve is down to get back to a situation where you're approaching normal, because everybody's under the stress and strain of the long duration of this, but we really have to be careful and take a look at that curve,” he explained. “The point that Dr. Walensky made is critical. If we plateau at 70,000, we are at that very precarious position that we were right before the fall surge.” “You know, we don't want to be people always looking at the dark side of things, but you want to be realistic,” he continued. “So we have to carefully look at what happens over the next week or so with those numbers before you start making the understandable need to relax on certain restrictions. So just watch it closely and be prepared to react according to what actually happens.”Andy Slavitt also issued a reminder of President Joe Biden’s small ask of the American people. “The president has asked that for a hundred days, we all do our part as a country to stop the spread of this virus while we are vaccinating the country,” he said. “And if we do that, and if we do that successfully, we will be able to open schools and businesses safely and keep them open.”He also reminded what happens when we don’t follow the recommended fundamentals: cases surge. “We've seen what happens. So the president is very strong in these calls,” he said. “We think it is a mistake to take our foot off the gas too early, especially when we are accelerating our vaccination efforts right now.”RELATED: If You Feel This You May Have Already Had COVID Says Dr. FauciHow to Stay Safe During This PandemicSo follow Fauci’s fundamentals and help end this pandemic, no matter where you live—wear a face mask that fits snugly and is double layered, don’t travel, social distance, avoid large crowds, don't go indoors with people you're not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene, get vaccinated when it becomes available to you, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don't visit any of these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.
