Aquaman Will Feature Classic DC Villain?

‘Aquaman’ is rumoured to feature a classic DC comic book villain… but it’s not the one everyone has been expecting.

According to JoBlo, the upcoming big screen debut for DC’s Aquaman will feature a familiar face – Aquaman’s half-brother, Orm.

“I’m told that Ocean Master aka Orm Curry aka Aquaman’s half-brother is the villain that’s currently being developed to square off with the King of Atlantis in his first solo outing,” they revealed.

Ocean Master has long been considered one of Aquaman’s greatest enemies… alongside Black Manta, of course. Aquaman’s half-brother, he’s been through various versions in the long history of DC comic books. But the latest incarnation sees him taking the throne of Atlantis after their mother’s death… with Aquaman attempting to overthrow him.

The screenplay is “said to be reminiscent of the comic struggles of the duo in a brother-vs-brother fight for the throne of Atlantis.”

But as Charles Roven told Collider, it’s still early days.

“We’re very early days,” he said. “We’re just starting with the screenplay. [James Wan is] making The Conjuring 2 now, so he’s had his hand in the creation of let’s just call it a working document from which to write. But he’s directing that film [and] he’s got his hand ever so slightly in the development, but he’s really gonna throw himself into it after he finishes shooting Conjuring 2. And we’re planning on it being his film after Conjuring 2. He is a serious Aquaman fan.“

Of course, many fans were expecting an appearance from Black Manta – arguably the most iconic Aquaman villain. And that could still be on the cards…

In the recent comic books, Ocean Master hired Black Manta to steal the relic sceptre - an Atlantean object of power from the Dead King’s tomb. And if the rumours of Orm and his brother clashing over the rule of Atlantis are true, we could yet see Black Manta on the big screen.

But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Aquaman’ heads to cinemas on 27 July 2018.
