I'm Positive This Is the Perfect Black Bag

As a fashion editor, my designer handbag game is weird. I'm skeptical of retail prices, which means the latest it-bag is typically out of my grasp. I stay in the lane of the five seasons-old Balenciaga I got at a sample sale or the cute thrifted straw tote I wear one summer and toss the next. A bag I would own forever eludes me and my budget. In other words, I’m crazy cheap; I only buy tampons when they're on sale.

Long ago I resigned myself to the fact that I will never own a Chanel, and I'm ok with that. The Row's line of luxuriously casual bags are aspirational, but few of us are lucky enough to throw 3K at an accessory. But when I attended Mansur Gavriel's spring 2018 see-now-buy-now collection, I laid eyes on the most perfect bag ever.

Did bucket bags even exist before Mansur Gavriel launched their now iconic style in 2012? The bag launched a thousand lookalikes, and the company organically grew to include clothing, shoes, and even scrunchies. But it's their small hobo bag, which premiered this month, that is making me rethink everything. It is low-key elegance for only $500.

With this bag my mind wanders to the woman I could be and the promises I will make to myself once I buy it: I will no longer overstuff a tiny crossbody; I'm going to carry a big girl wallet and not stuff my my comically large phone into the back pocket of my jeans; I will no longer look sloppy in a t-shirt and jeans with this hobo slung over my shoulder; I'll refrain from telling people my aesthetic is Ali MacGraw meets Meredith Blake in Parent Trap because that will be obvious.

This is an adult handbag that sartorially negates my often non-adult decisions. This is a bag that softly whispers "I am totally put together," even if I'm spiraling and using Queer Eye as a nightly therapy sesh. I'm 100% convinced it will cure all my problems...Or at the very least, I'll actually have a solid handbag that will never go out of style.
