At exactly midnight last night, The Crown tweeted out a picture of a first look at Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth in the series, and the caption was simply "patience."

She looks totally in character, wearing pearls, a pink skirt-suit (it's probably safe to assume), and drinking her tea, which is also very on brand for the character.

As per the original plan for the show, the younger cast will be replaced after season two with a whole new set of actors as the characters age through the timeline. Claire Foy played the queen in the first two seasons, but Colman will replace her.

When Colman was initially cast in the role, she said that she was "So thrilled to be part of The Crown. I was so utterly gripped watching it, a proper 'just one more' feeling. I think Claire Foy is an absolute genius. She's an incredibly hard act to follow. I'm basically going to rewatch every episode and copy her!."

Other castings include Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, formerly played by Matt Smith, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, formerly played by Vanessa Kirby, and Ben Daniels as Anthony Armstrong-Jones, who was played by Matthew Goode.

Vanessa Kirby confirmed the news on her own Instagram earlier this year.

The third season will pick up where the second left off, in 1964, and it will span roughly a decade, stopping in 1976, which probably shoots down any possibilities of a Princess Diana plot in this season, considering she and Prince Charles met in 1977.
