Ankie Lau submits movie for HK Oscar bid consideration

25 Sep – Ankie Lau recently revealed that she has submitted her new movie, "A Wishing Tree" for consideration as Hong Kong's entry at the Academy Awards' Best Foreign Language Film category.

As reported on Mingpao, the 60-year-old actress, who appeared alongside her daughter, Ankie Beilke at the press conference of the said movie in Tsim Sha Tsui on 23 September, shared that the result of the submission will be announced early next month.

"For now, I will only concentrate on promoting the film, which will be released tomorrow. But given the current atmosphere in Hong Kong, with people paying more attention to the news rather than go watch a film, for now we will only show the movie in four theatres," she said.

Ankie, who also directed the movie written by her aforementioned daughter, added that they will wait after 1 October before holding a large-scale premiere.

"I hope to invite friends like Chow Yun Fat, Andy Lau, and Jackie Chan to attend the event," she said.

The movie will also be released internationally in November, while its sequel will be shot sometime next year.

"A Wishing Tree" stars Ankie Beilke as a mixed-race girl who returns home to Hong Kong from Munich to embark on a journey of self-discovery following a breakup with her boyfriend.
