Ang Lee is happy Gong Li presides the Golden Horse jury

21 Nov – Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee recently admitted that he is happy to have Gong Li presiding as the head jury for the 55th Golden Horse Awards.

As reported on Mingpao, the director, who took over the chairman position for the Golden Horse executive committee following last year's event, stated that he felt the pressure to do the awards justice, and that Gong's involvement in choosing the winners will be a great help for him.

"When I first saw her name in the invitation list [to be the head jury], I immediately thought [that this is a good pick]. I wasn't sure she would come, but it was worth the try," he said.

It is noted that Gong previously made headlines for saying that she would never return to the Golden Horse Awards again in 2014 after losing the Best Actress accolade to Taiwanese actress Chen Shiang-chyi.

At the time, it was rumoured that Gong was at odds with Joan Chen, who was the head jury. The latter denied this, saying that she actually cast all her votes for Gong to win.

Speaking about Gong's participation in this year's selection, Ang said that he was touched that the actress accepted the invitation.

"I am looking forward to her leadership. I am honoured to be able to invite her," he added.

This is not the first time Gong judges for a movie awards. She has done so five times, including the 50th Cannes Film Festival, the 59th Venice Film Festival, and the 17th Shanghai International Film Festival.
