Andrew Scott: 'I don’t think I’ll get asked to play Bond'

Are you going to play Bond? It’s the question every hot actor gets asked at some point while he’s surfing the fame wave. So, it’s probably no surprise then, that Andrew Scott has been added to the list right now. But he doesn’t think it’s very likely (so that’s not a no, then?).

“I don’t think I’ll get asked to play Bond” was his answer when asked in an interview in this weekend’s Guardian. But then he also doesn’t think there’s any rush. “I don’t think people are at parties screaming, “Who’s going to be the next Bond?” he joked. “They won’t announce it until 2022, so it will probably go to some whippersnapper who will surprise us all.”

It does seem unlikely casting though considering the actor has already been a villain in an earlier Bond movie. But then that apparently hasn’t stopped people asking if he’ll play a future Bond villain either.

He went on to reveal to the paper, “At the Baftas recently someone was like, ‘Oh, you’re the hot priest from Fleabag and Phoebe Waller-Bridge is writing the Bond film, will you play the villain?” I thought, “Didn’t they see me in Spectre?” That’s showbusiness! So, no more villains for me for a while.”

The Irish actor is super hot right now, but he’s been creeping up in the public consciousness for some time. First as Moriarty in Sherlock, then as C in Bond and more recently in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s hit comedy. And right now, Andrew Scott is wowing audiences in London playing Garry Essendine, Noel Coward’s hilarious farce Present Laughter.

The attention he’s been getting since Fleabag has surprised him. “It’s mind-blowing,” he said, “being described as a sex symbol. Whatever floats your boat, I suppose. I’m very happy that Phoebe put me in that part of the hot priest, because it was definitely uncharted territory. It’s better than people being repulsed by me. So, I’ll take it!”
