As reported by Deadline, Roberts will lead the comedy film, which sees Katie Locke O’Brien make her directorial debut, with the script being penned by Gabrielle D’Amico.
The film will see Roberts play Laurel Mack who has to take the “walk of shame” back to her hometown after “imploding” on a popular American dating show. When she fails to to win love on the show, she finds herself living in her quirky parents' basement.
Laurel is left without any friends, while also bumping into the miserable ex the whole town adores and experiencing the constant mockery of everyone who witnessed her public meltdown. She then goes on a funny and heartfelt journey to discover self-love and true connections with others.
Locke O’Brien released a statement expressing her excitement at the project, which is due to begin shooting in early 2024, saying: “Hot Mess is a sharp, witty script that stood out to me as a fresh story of a woman finding her place in a world ruled by social media and outsized expectations. I am so eager to bring this to life with Emma as the perfect Laurel.”
“We are thrilled to be partnering with the indomitable force that is Emma Roberts on Hot Mess. She will undoubtedly bring the ferocity, vulnerability and comedic hot-messiness to this character,” added producers for the film.
“The time has come for a comedy set in the world of reality dating shows and their hold on our collective consciousness. Kate’s comedic and heartfelt approach will make a very commercial comedy that speaks to anyone seeking self-love.”
Roberts, who has starred in five seasons of American Horror Story, will appear in the upcoming 12th season of the anthology series, which is called subtitled Delicate. The cast for the season will also include Kim Kardashian, Cara Delevingne and Matt Czuchry.
