American Gods Cast, EPs Talk Coin Tricks, Road Trips, Kardashians and the Dangers of Loving a Goddess

Much like Michelle Obama in her DNC speech Monday, American Gods executive producer Bryan Fuller is skilled at throwing shade without mentioning his target(s) by name.

The object of the EP’s ire? The Kardashian family, though you won’t hear him speak the ubiquitous surname even once in this interview from TVLine’s Comic-Con studio presented by ZTE.

A tiny bit of backstory: Fuller’s upcoming series, produced with Michael Green (Heroes), follows Neil Gaiman’s novel about a recently released convict’s run-in with gods both ancient and modern. (There’s a lot more to it, but as you’ll see, Gaiman does an expert job of explaining at the beginning of the clip.)

One of the new gods, Media (played by The X-Files‘ Gillian Anderson), shows up in the guise of various icons through the decades — and part of the fun of writing the role was determining “who in pop culture deserves to be a god, and who doesn’t?” Fuller said, adding that he and Green chose people whose art — “and not just being a personality” — made them iconic.

Fuller, Green and Gaiman joined cast members Ricky Whittle, Pablo Schreiber, Ian McShane, Bruce Langley and Yetide Badaki for a rousing talk that also covered: coin tricks, a luckless leprechaun, Pokémon Go, Whittle’s risqué first words to Badaki and the experience that Gaiman and Fuller — and only “probably a handful of people on the face of the planet” — have had during the making of the series.
