Amber Heard, Johnny Depp Argue Over Divorce Settlement Donation

After Amber Heard announced that she would be donating the entirety of her $7 million divorce settlement from Johnny Depp to charity, Depp agreed to send the checks directly to the organizations. But according to a new statement from Heard’s team, Depp isn’t being completely honest.

On Thursday, Depp’s team announced that he donated the first installment of the settlement to two charities: the American Civil Liberties Union, with a particular focus on stopping domestic violence, and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. The donations should eventually amount to $3.5 million for each organization.

But by personally donating the money to the charities, Depp would fail to honor the terms of their settlement, as he would receive a charitable tax deduction, argues Heard’s camp.

“Amber Heard appreciates Johnny Depp’s novel interest in supporting two of her favorite charities, the ACLU for domestic violence and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. This is great and unexpected news,” said the statement from Heard’s team.

“However, if Johnny wishes to change the settlement agreement, we must insist that he honor the full amount by donating $14M to charity, which, after accounting for his tax deduction, is equal to his $7M payment obligation to Amber. We would also insist that the full amount be paid immediately and not drawn out over many years.

“Anything less would be a transparent attempt by Johnny’s counsel, Laura Wasser and Patti Glaser, to reduce their client’s true payment by half under the guise of newfound concern for charities that he has never previously supported.”

Glaser did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment and Wasser could not be reached. According to TMZ, which first reported the news of the disagreement, both the ACLU and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles confirmed that they received checks from Depp.

Heard made the announcement that she would be donating the settlement to charity earlier this month. In a statement at the time, Heard said, “Money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves.”

“Following Amber Heard’s announcement that her divorce settlement was to be divided equally and gifted to Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the American Civil Liberties Union, two exceptionally deserving and important charities, Johnny Depp has sent the first of multiple installments of those monies to each charity in the name of Amber Heard, which when completed will honor the full amount of Ms. Heard’s pledge,” a rep for Depp told TMZ.

Heard and Depp settled their divorce case on Aug. 16.
