Aloysius Pang on artificial life support, condition 'very serious': Ng Eng Hen
Local actor Aloysius Pang is in a “very serious” condition and needs “artificial life support of his lungs, kidneys, and heart” following his latest operation, said Minister of Defence Ng Eng Hen in a Facebook post on Wednesday (23 January).
Dr Ng’s updates came after speaking to Dr Teo Li Tserng, chief of trauma and acute care surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, who was flown to New Zealand to assist with Pang’s care.
The 28-year-old actor had sustained injuries to his chest and abdominal areas while carrying out repair works inside the Singapore Self-Propelled Howitzer at Waiouru Training Area, New Zealand, on Saturday at about 2pm (Singapore time).
Pang, an armament technician from the 268th Battalion Singapore Artillery, was participating in Exercise Thunder Warrior at the time of the incident.
Dr Ng’s comments come after the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF)’s update on Wednesday that Pang required a third operation at the Waikato Hospital in New Zealand after his condition had worsened. The statement added that his condition remains critical and he is warded in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
Pang had earlier undergone abdominal surgery on Saturday evening and a planned follow-up relook surgery was successfully completed at 11am (Singapore time) on Monday, said the ministry on Monday.
“Dr Teo told me that surgeons and staff at the Waikato Hospital – a regional trauma centre – are doing all they possibly can to keep up the support and improve his condition,” Dr Ng said.
“Coincidentally, the head surgeon responsible for Corporal First Class (National Service) Pang’s care and Dr Teo know each other, having participated in international conferences together.
“This rapport is useful and I told Dr Teo to convey Singapore’s appreciation to the doctors and staff there for their untiring efforts, and to let us know if there is anything else they need to help CFC (NS) Pang,” he added.
Pang had been described by Dr Teo as being alert, in stable condition and “breathing on his own” on Monday afternoon.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.
