Aljur Abrenica criticised for stance on ABS-CBN issue

27 Jul – Aljur Abrenica has recently been criticised for his statement regarding the shutdown of ABS-CBN.

As reported on PEP, last week, Abrenica, who signed with the network back in 2014, stated that he does sympathise with ABS-CBN and is thankful for their support for him, adding that he is pro-franchise.

However, he then added that the whole situation is "beyond" him.

"I mean, their fight is their fight. Every case like this, there is an opportunity to make everything better. That's all I look at," he added.

The last line could be Abrenica's way of saying that he believes in the allegations of ABS-CBN's shortcomings including illegal use of pay-per-view service and others - claims that the network had already refuted.

His statement has shocked writer James Banaag, who shared the article about Abrenica to Twitter and said, "It's just sad that we have artists who don't really understand the whole incident."

On the other hand, many expressed their belief that Abrenica's stance was influenced by his father-in-law Robin Padilla, who is a firm supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Padilla previously stated that he is in favour of renewing ABS-CBN's franchise, but that the network should adjust the working conditions of its employees first.
