If you’re looking to up your at-home facial game, we may have found the answer.

Until recently, facial steamers were widely unheard of and were mainly used by top beauty technicians and A-listers in the know.

Then in 2019, Victoria Beckham showed off her Sarah Chapman Pro Hydro-Mist Steamer on Instagram stories - and when VB tells you that you “need this in your life”, you don’t argue.

Two years on, facial steamers have seen a surge in interest as people invest in their lacklustre lockdown skin - and, crucially, they are now much more affordable.

So what’s all the fuss about?

What is a facial steamer?

A facial steamer is a gadget that heats up water to allow you to steam your face. This can also be achieved by putting your head over a bowl of steaming water and placing a towel on top although, spoiler alert, the DIY approach is nowhere near as comfortable.

What are the benefits of facial steaming?

Aside from feeling generally calming and enjoyable, facial steaming can open your pores - releasing spot-causing bacteria and allowing your skincare products to penetrate deeper – it can also brighten the skin.

Which facial steamer to buy?

While Beckham’s facial steamer, the Sarah Chapman Pro Hydro-Mist Steamer costs a rather hefty £119, we have found a more affordable version on Amazon.

The EZBASICS Nano Ionic Facial Steamer is a new type of steamer that generates nano-ionic steam, which means the steam particles it produces are smaller than normal, which the brand claims makes it up to 10x more effective in penetrating skin than basic hot water steamers.

The device takes just 30 seconds to warm up and can be used in 10-minute sessions every few days, though it’s good to build up slowly.

One of our favourite things about this facial steamer, is that you can add a few drops of your favourite essential oils to create an uber-relaxing home-spa experience.

What the reviews say:

With thousands of five-star reviews and 71% of customers rating the product with top marks, it’s hard to think of why we shouldn’t treat ourselves to this new beauty gadget.

  • “Incredibly easy to use and so relaxing. I honestly couldn't do another face mask without steaming my face on this first. 10 minute steam does the trick.”

  • “Loved, loved this steamer for my skin care routine.”

  • “I used this [for the] first time and [my] skin feels so nice and it is easy to use. It stopped automatically when [the] water finished. Highly recommended.”

  • “Amazing little machine. So pleased with this. Highly recommend.”

  • “I am so pleased with this steamer, it has given me a nice fresh glow and I like the idea you could use it if you have a cold or blocked nose too, although not used it for that reason yet, plus it’s so easy to use.”
