A Deadwood Movie Script Is Currently Underway

Fans of the HBO Western series ‘Deadwood’ will be pleased to know that the script for a feature film is in the process of being written.

According to IGN, the screenplay for a proposed big screen movie is underway even though any sort of film is yet to be greenlit by HBO or anyone else for that matter.

During the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour the news was confirmed by HBO president of programming Casey Bloys: “David [Milch] is writing the script.“ revealed Bloys. He went on to say: "I imagine it will be very good. I feel good about it.”

Bloys’ non-committal answer to whether a film will actually happen kind of seems irreverent - if he’s happy that the script is on its way, then surely it’ll be a matter of time before he officially announces that a long-awaited movie is coming.

To contextualise the show, think of ‘Game of Thrones’ meets ‘Justified’ set in the Wild West, with its adult themes and backstabbing that replaces ‘GoT’s’ swords and dragons with guns and land deeds. Timothy Olyphant plays Seth Bullock, a new settler to the town and as a former sheriff often takes matters into his own righteous hands, mainly where outlaws and local ruthless bar and brothel owner Al Swearengen (played by Ian McShane) are concerned. And like ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Deadwood’ isn’t all about mindless violence, but clever chess-like strategy and ongoing power play within the townspeople.

‘Deadwood’ aired on HBO way back in 2004 and ran for three glorious seasons before it was unceremoniously cancelled, much to the dismay of fans. Starring Olyphant, McShane, Powers Booth, Molly Parker, John Hawkes, Dayton Callie, and a host of other names, ‘Deadwood’ told the story of a lawless town in the late 1800s in South Dakota.

Fascinatingly, several characters and the location itself are based on a mixture of historical truth and fictionalised storytelling, but the series was lauded for its authentic-looking and hard hitting aesthetic.

‘Deadwood’ follows the trend of popular television shows adapting into movies, with ‘Arrested Development’ touted to get the big screen treatment soon.
