9 things that always happened at the school disco

Ah the school disco. They were a rite of passage which - as a Nineties child - seemed to go by in a haze of S Club 7 routines, tubes of rainbow dust, stick on face gems and mounds of party rings.

But the school disco could soon be a thing of the past, as more and more children are eschewing school dances. According to new research by Barnardo's, the children's charity, just five per cent of 13 to 15-year-olds have made friends at a disco compared to 37 per cent of their parents' generation, with kids increasingly making friends online rather than in the real world.

Don't they realise what they're missing?

Here are the nine things you could always count on taking place:

  1. The boys would line up on one side of the room and the girls on the other, refusing to mix until absolutely necessary.

  2.  Someone always slipped and fractured their wrist doing the Saturday Night routine.

  3. The stench of Impulse and Lynx would linger in the school hall for days afterwards.

  4. You spent most of the night in the loos with your friends reapplying blueberry flavoured (and probably sparkly) lip balm, and checking your expertly crimped hair.

  5. Half the boys were wearing an item of clothing with flames on it. The other half had so much gel in their hair it glistened.

  6. Dancing to the Macarena made you feel alive.

  7. Seeing your teachers dressed down and dad dancing at the edges of the dance floor was at once thrilling and disturbing.

  8. The rumours about which teachers were clearly getting it on were rife.

  9.  Feeling sheer horror when you saw your mum - who was under strict instructions to stay in the car when she came to pick you up - poke her head round the door and wave as you were throwing your best shapes.
