'80s Invasion: All of the Commercials Starring Rob Lowe, John Stamos, and Fred Savage Ranked

With the premiere of Fox comedies Grandfathered and The Grinder this week, it feels like an abundance of ‘80s heartthrobs are making a play for our hearts once again. Of course, when it comes to Rob Lowe, John Stamos, and Fred Savage, we already know they’re experienced at making a play for our… hard-earned cash. All three gents — but especially Savage — have been trying to sell us stuff for decades.

Well, it’s time for us to take these pitchmen to task. We’ve dug up some of their greatest commercial hits and even a few (absolute must-watch) deep cuts and ranked them. The farther you scroll down the list, the more we’ll be saying it: You’re welcome.

11. Fred Savage for Pac-Man multi-vitamins/Fruit Roll-Ups/Fruity Marshmallow Krispies/McDonald’s

The Grinder star managed to do so many commercials throughout his childhood, we felt a deep need to combine them into one big tie, and embed the Pac-Man vitamins (which, apparently, were so much better for you than Flintstone’s vitamins, mom!) because it was Savage’s first. You’ll need an eagle eye to find him in some of them, but he’s there, we assure you. While we’re on the subject of Savage, we also want to point out that we opted not to include commercials he directed (even those Elizabeth Banks-starring spots for Realtor.com). Ditto The Wizard, which was a 1989 movie that was basically a 100-minute ad for Nintendo.

10. Rob Lowe for Visit California

Savage’s Grinder co-star was just one of many celebs who joined in promoting tourism in 2009 in his home state during Arnold Schwarzenegger’s governorship. He’s starred in several more similar spots since.

9. Fred Savage for Honda

Let’s be honest: Modern Fred just isn’t as adorable as little Fred. The 39-year-old actor became a pitchman for the car company as mostly just a voice in 2014, but recently starred in this doozy with racing legend Mario Antretti.

8. John Stamos for Oikos

The Grandfathered star used his looks and Greek background to shill Dannon’s Greek yogurt line in Super Bowl ads starting in 2012, but was dropped earlier this year for Carolina Panthers star Cam Newton when the brand decided it wanted to “appeal more to males,” according to AdAge.

7. Rob Lowe for Orange Mobile

We think the actor was asking us to turn our cellphones off before a movie in the U.K. in 2008, but it’s not entirely clear. Further, there are no phones in this ad… but there is an awkward cameo by a thong.

6. John Stamos for 10 10 987

For just 3 cents a minute you… won’t actually get to talk to 2003-era John Stamos. But please note that reference he makes to his wife — he was indeed still married to Rebecca Romijn when this commercial hit the airwaves.

5. Fred Savage for Scott Paper Company

Little Fred wants to be a teacher so he can help America learn. Aww… Still, this spot gets bonus points with us for casting a little girl who wants to be a computer programmer when she grows up. Go girl!

4. Rob Lowe for DirecTV

We’re guessing you haven’t forgotten these recent ads, which were pulled after some of the claims were found to be inaccurate. That’s too bad. We enjoy a Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe as much as the next guy.

3. John Stamos for Neet

This 1983 spot is special on so many levels. So. Many. Levels.

2. Rob Lowe for Discovery

We pretty much were saying “so sharky” from the time this Shark Week promo aired in 2014 until Super-Creepy Rob Lowe went and ruined it.

1. Fred Savage for Pepsi

This soda ad premiered during the Super Bowl in 1990 and became an instant classic. It was so neat. We were mesmerized by its effervescent charm. Seriously, though, what little girl didn’t want Wonder Years-era Savage to write them a love letter and make them feel like… a Pepsi.

Grandfathered, starring John Stamos, airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m., followed by The Grinder, starring Rob Lowe and Fred Savage, at 8:30 p.m. on Fox.
