60-year-old woman sues "I Am Not Madame Bovary" team

28 Mar - A 60-year-old woman is suing the director of "I Am Not Madame Bovary" Feng Xiaogang for "causing a significant emotional distress" to her.

As reported on Tencent, the woman's claim was due to the similarity between her name and the Chinese title of the movie, "I Am Not Pan Jinlian" - which tells the story about a woman who started a fight against the legal system after she is wrongfully accused of infidelity and divorced by her husband.

According to the 60-year-old Pan Jinlian, the movie is making her severely depressed, as well as tainting the good name of the Pan family in the eyes of the society.

In her argument during the opening session of her court case at the Beijing Chaoyang People's court, which was not attended by Feng, Pan said that the film didn't state that any semblance to reality was mere coincidence, and that she was badly affected by Feng's opening narration in the film in which he said that people have used the name Pan Jinlian to refer to improper women since the Song Dynasty.

She demanded for Feng to stop the infringement, apologise, restore her reputation, and pay her RMB 1000 yuan in damages.

In reality, however, the Chinese title was referring to the famous fictional villainess Pan Jinlian from the 17th century Chinese novel, "The Plum in the Golden Vase", known for her sexual debauchery.

A legal advisor recently commented about the case, saying that Pan is unlikely to win her case since there is no direct connection between the movie character and the woman herself.
