57 Singaporeans shortlisted for inaugural Fitness Best Asia Awards

A new award ceremony that aims to honour the best in Asia’s fitness and wellness industry announced its first batch of finalists on Tuesday (7 March), 57 of whom are Singaporeans such as Olympian Joseph Schooling and influencer Sandra Riley Tang.

The Fitness Best Asia Awards, which will be taking place for the first time in Singapore at Zouk on 16 May, has shortlisted close to 100 individuals comprising social media influencers, personal trainers and fitness instructors across nine of its categories.

The remaining 11 categories are dedicated to brands, facilities and inspiring community campaigns.

“The Fitness Best Asia Awards 2017 is created to give recognition to fitness practitioners who are passionate and are making a difference in other people’s lives through healthy living incorporating fitness,” said technical director Laila White in a media release.

“We also want to shine the spotlight on fitness brands and facilities that are aiding those professionals. We have a unique combination of familiar names as well as up-and-coming names in the fitness business that have made our shortlist in various categories,” she added.

Renowned athletes such as Quah Zheng Wen (swimming), Irfan Fandi (football) and Kyra Poh (solo freestyle ifly) are among some of the athletes shortlisted under the Vanguard category.

Other familiar names such as The Sam Willows’ Sandra Riley Tang (Social Media Influencer of the Year Award), Fandi Ahmad (Special Achievement in Fitness Award), Glory Barnabas (Special Achievement in Fitness Award) and physique competitor Jason Chee (Social Media Influencer of the Year Award) were also shortlisted for the Awards’ various categories.

Those shortlisted for the Para Athlete of the Year Award include paralympic medalists Yip Pin Xiu (swimming), Theresa Goh (swimming), Jovin Tan (sailing) and Desiree Lim (sailing), Gemma Foo (equestrian), Maximillian Tan (equestrian) and Laurentia Tan (equestrian).

Public voting for the awards are open from 7 March to 30 April 2017 at http://www.fitnessbest.com, with public votes making up 60 per cent of candidates’ overall scores in the Brands, Facilities and Individual categories. Judges’ scores will weigh 100 per cent in the Vanguard category.

The eight judges include Korean golf ambassador Areum Jung, Singapore’s 3-time SEA Games gold-winning water polo team vice-captain Renkai Yip, winner of several body-building competitions in Thailand Nuannaree Sriwaralak (aka Ploy), Philippines’ celebrated fitness coach Paolo Villarroel and Malaysia’s first and only Formula One Race Car driver Alex Yoong.

Singapore master instructor of over 5,000 personal trainers Diane Haslam, founder of Motion Dynamics of Hong Kong Chris Watts and Indonesia’s competitive bodybuilding pioneer Ade Rai will also be a part of the judging panel.
