A dining table is the easiest piece in your home to dress up with seasonal decor. Whether you’re a longtime dinner party host or simply looking to give your table for two a massive upgrade, Oh Joy! founder and creative director Joy Cho has insider tips on how to craft a flawless tablescape—especially for fall.

"Fall tablescapes are like the first draft for holiday decorating," Cho tells House Beautiful. "You can see what styles you’re into this season and try out new pieces that make sense in your home."

Some of Cho’s go-to stores for acquiring seasonal tablescape decor include T.J.Maxx and Marshalls, so naturally, her must-haves are budget-friendly. Ahead, dive into Cho’s pro tips for creating a fall tablescape (some of which apply to every season!) along with the products she swears by (that you can shop and display in no time). Your dining table will never be bare again!

Add plenty of layers

“When I begin to think about decorating my table—for an event, theme, family dinner, or a new season—the first thing I like to add is different layers to help build out the base of my vision,” Cho explains. “I’ve found that a unique table runner or placemats are easy ways to elevate any setup.”

Incorporate varying heights and textures

To give your table dimension, add pieces with different heights and textures. Candleholders, like this green velvet set from T.J.Maxx, and flower-filled vases can easily bring in both aspects, leaving your table full of intrigue. Pumpkins, of course, are another solid option for fall. They can fit into any aesthetic—whether you’re into all-white pumpkins, wooden versions, or plaid fabric ones.

Go for bold colors

Don’t be afraid to add color! “Pops of greens, oranges, and yellows are unexpected but welcome fall touches,” Cho says. “Bonus points for adding bright fuschia to really help modernize the look.”

Try metallic accents

“Adding metals into the table brings more texture and shimmer to any color palette or combination,” Cho says. She loves this marble tray with brass handles and this steel flatware set from T.J.Maxx and Marshalls because they can give your table an unexpected yet charming modern touch.

Use seasonal dinnerware

Set aside your go-to dinnerware set for something more seasonal, like these deep blue plates with brown edges paired with copper mugs. “This combo is a tasteful way to lean into the seasonal theme and build the ultimate fall tablescape,” Cho gushes.
