5 steps to get you started on healthy living

Giving up a life of laziness is tough to do. It's great to just sit in front of the couch and watch television, or to eat whatever you want, whenever you want. Unfortunately, the older you get, the more this “ideal” life becomes worse for you. It isn't easy getting into a fitness routine, but with consistency and persistence, it is possible to turn your sedentary life around. Here are some tips to follow when trying to live a healthier life.

Find a regular routine. They say it takes 21 days to form a habit. Simply commit yourself to 21 days of regular physical activity. Peel yourself off that couch and move! No excuses!

Give yourself a concrete goal. If you have pegs or a “body idol,” keep that person in mind when you feel like you don't want to go on.

Be a smart shopper. Make a list, keep kids at home and never shop on an empty stomach. This will help you buy only what’s on your list and stick to healthy food choices.

Keep healthy snacks. Even if you are eating, at least you can keep it healthy and with less calories. Fruit makes a good substitute for artificial sweets and roasted nuts are great instead of chips.

Find something you love to do. If you hate running, don't do it. If circuit training is not your thing, find something else to do. There is something for everyone in the fitness world, whether you are into endurance training or something gentler on the body like yoga. Try the ones that sound interesting and pick the one that suits you best.
