‘47 Meters Down’: Freestyle Snaps Up Pic From Dimension Films

Byron Allen’s new Freestyle Releasing has picked up its second title, acquiring the shark attack thriller 47 Meters Down from Dimension Films, which acquired the pic in 2014. The deal for North American distribution rights includes a 2500-plus screen theatrical release set for 2017.

Mandy Moore and Claire Holt star as a pair of cage-diving sisters whose boat breaks away from them, leaving them in an observation cage trapped at the bottom of the ocean, surrounded by hungry Great Whites. With little oxygen in their tanks, their only hope is to try and swim 47 meters to the surface while being hunted by the sharks. Matthew Modine co-starred and Johannes Roberts directed.

The Weinstein Company-owned Dimension had not set a release date yet but it did not beat Sony’s The Shallows to multiplexes. That was a similar human-vs-shark tale — that one with Blake Lively and director Jaume Collet-Serra — and bowed June 24. Dimension had shifted to a more conservative release strategy for 47 Meters Down for a summer bow. “When the producers [Mark Lane and James Harris] brought us Entertainment Studios, who will release the movie wide next year, we all agreed this would be the best option for everyone involved and were happy to make a deal,” said Matthew Signer, EVP Production & Creative Affairs at Dimension.

47 Meters Down is the second acquisition by Entertainment Studios’ Freestyle, with the horror suspense movie Friend Request already set for an October 7 bow.
