Recently, a number of supernatural-themed shows have been sprouting, including Korean drama The Great Shaman Ga Doo Shim and the Singapore-Malaysia collaboration The Ferryman: Legends Of Nanyang. The latest addition is Viu's original drama Sometimes When We Touch.

Sometimes When We Touch follows the story of Namgong University’s supernatural society, led by Stone (Kent Tsai). Joining him on various spooky expeditions are Kam (Hong Qun-hun), French Toast (Keung To), Pui On (Tammy Lin), and Ching Fong (Pai Ching-i).

One day, Stone dies in an accident during one of their expeditions. The underworld guide Siu Lo (Eugenie Liu) breaks the rules by resurrecting him, so she is tasked to help 10 spirits reincarnate within 49 days in order to be pardoned. On the other hand, Stone gains the ability to see spirits, and is convinced by Siu Lo to lend her a hand.

Here are four things that make Sometimes When We Touch different from the other supernatural dramas.

1. It's a horror drama with a heartwarming and comedic spin to it.

On the surface, Sometimes When We Touch may seem terrifying, with spine-chilling sequences and suspenseful background music. But each ghost story, which spans about two episodes, has a heartwarming tale to tell, especially when it comes to the regrets that these spirits have. Only by granting their wishes and making them satisfied enough to leave everything behind can Siu Lo and Stone complete their mission.

Sometimes When We Touch also packs a hilarious punch, with mainly Hong Qun-hun and Pai Ching-i taking the roles of comedic relief. In particular, Pai plays an eccentric character, who has a strange fashion sense and is extraordinarily soft-spoken. In fact, she speaks so softly that Stone can never hear what she says, and Kam, for some reason, can always understand her and repeats her words to Stone. Both Hong Qun-hun and Pai Ching-i form a great pair in the drama, and their interaction is never boring to watch.

2. It's a collaboration between Taiwan and Hong Kong, featuring young actors from both areas.

Produced by Taiwan’s GTV and Hong Kong’s ViuTV, Sometimes When We Touch features both Taiwanese and Hong Kong actors. Among the six main cast members, only Keung To is from Hong Kong. Aged 22, Keung To is also the youngest, while the 33-year-old Pai Ching-i is the oldest. Possibly due to the fact that the six of them are relatively young and new to the industry, their acting skills are not superb and may appear exaggerated and unnatural at times.

3. It is originally aired in Mandarin, but dubbed in Cantonese on Viu.

Filmed and set in Taiwan, Sometimes When We Touch is originally aired in Mandarin on GTV, but is later dubbed in Cantonese for the Viu release. As such, the Cantonese version may sound a little awkward, as certain Taiwanese expressions, especially the lines in Taiwanese Hokkien, may be lost in translation.

Luckily, in addition to the Cantonese version, Viu has also made the Mandarin version available — both come with various subtitles. I would totally recommend you watch the Mandarin version to better appreciate the drama, regardless of whether you understand the language or not.

4. It's a must-watch for fans of Hong Kong boy band Mirror's "Keungson" pairing.

Apart from Keung To, who is one of the 12 members of the popular Hong Kong boy band Mirror, Sometimes When We Touch also stars Anson Lo from the same idol group. Lo plays the role of Fei, a Hong Kong exchange student who shares videos about his life in Taiwan. It feels a little weird though, when Fei communicates in Cantonese in the Mandarin version of the drama, but speaks Mandarin in his videos shown in the drama.

Although Lo's cameo in the first episode is a little disappointing — it was merely an introduction to his character – episodes five and six will shift the spotlight to Fei, and reveal his high school days with French Toast back in Hong Kong. These few episodes, sadly, constitute all of Lo's participation in the drama.

However, fans of the "Keungson" (Keung To and Anson Lo) pairing can look forward to the end of each episode, when the two reunite to sing the ending song of the drama. This is also the first time they sang together in Mandarin — their previous duet B.M.G. is in Cantonese.

Sometimes When We Touch may be yet another supernatural drama released this year, but it is still uniquely entertaining, covering various topics like love, friendship and family. Its comedic element may even be good for stress relief, something you would not expect from a supposed horror show.
