4 Things We Learnt When the Avengers Assembled in Singapore for Infinity War

Has it already been two years since #TeamCap made their way to Singapore during the Civil War press tour, resulting in one of the most chaotic geek events we’ve ever seen in Singapore? I don’t know how, but we lucked out again with more Avengers descending on our shores, this time for the long awaited Avengers: Infinity War movie.

Any MCU fan worth their salt knows that after 18 movies, this behemoth of a movie franchise now boils down to Infinity War, but without good old Robert Downey Jr setting the tone in the very first Iron Man movie 10 years ago, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

And right from the get-go it was obvious that RDJ was the centre of attention. When he strolled onto the stage for the press conference on Sunday (Apr 15), he was greeted by a loud chorus of “YEAAAH” and “OH MY GOD” from the many journalists who had assembled there.

So, what did we learn from the press con?

Everyone knows how much is riding on Infinity War

When posed a question about how it feels to be part of a franchise like the MCU, Downey wasted no time in letting that famous cockiness and playfulness shine through:

“We might be making the movies but we’re also fans, and we’re also critics of our own work and always want to try to make it better, but this time we might’ve nailed it.”

Cumberbatch added that while it was “a little intimidating” at first stepping onto a set “filled with a roster of iconic characters as well as iconic actors”, he soon lost himself in the process and really appreciated how much everyone was putting their all into making Infinity War.

Gillan also recounted how she didn’t hesitate when the call came asking if she was willing to shave her head for a role in a Marvel movie, and expressed gratitude for being able to play such a complex, yet sympathetic character in more than one Marvel movie.

Marvel takes their “No Spoilers” policy *very* seriously

Early on in the press con, one journalist made the mistake of asking co-director Joe Russo to clarify some details from the 20 minute screening that was shown to the press the night before. This was despite the multiple warnings from organisers to NOT spoil anything from the screening.

To his credit, Russo didn’t bat an eyelid as he reminded everyone that #ThanosDemandsYourSilence.

(Seriously, don’t spoil this movie for anyone, okay?)

Where’s Hawkeye?

Jeremy Renner

Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is nowhere to be seen in any of the promotional material for Infinity War, and were worried that they wouldn’t see our favourite archer.

When posed this same question, Russo seemed a little resigned — perhaps he’d been asked this too many times in interviews — but explained that shooting a movie on this scale with this many actors and schedules to coordinate often means that someone had to get left out. He even joked about how they had to “shut down Hollywood for a year” because of all the actors they had to schedule to shoot scenes on the movie.

However, he was quick to point out that he and his brother were working on Infinity War and Avengers 4 simultaneously, and that they had “an interesting story cooked up for Hawkeye” later on. In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait and see.

RDJ is the life of the party

This really shouldn’t be any surprise to fans, but RDJ is just a fun guy. The press con was a lively affair thanks to his frequent interjections and jokey banter, which were great for both lightening the mood and keeping the event going.

One notable exchange happened when a journalist brought up the issue of an apparent rumour that some censors were going to cut some scenes from Infinity War. When he asked the cast what they thought would’ve been cut out, Downey stood up after an extended bit of banter with his castmates and director and joked about stripping for the camera. Cue the catcalls and shrieks of delight from the room, but alas, he sat down soon after, still fully clothed.

Sadly, the press con ended much too soon, but I’ll leave you with some of the latest toy releases for the movie. I was very tempted to steal the Infinity Gauntlet for myself, but decided against it when I realised that it wasn’t going to fit into my bag.
