28 dead, 18 missing in Kazakhstan mine explosion
A methane explosion and fire in a coalmine in Kazakhstan has claimed the lives of at least 28 people, with another 18 miners believed to be trapped by rubble.
The incident was reported by the administration of Karaganda Oblast, where the mine, called the Kostenko mine, is located.
Search and rescue operations are currently underway at the mine, with 18 individuals having sought medical assistance.
The press service of ArselorMittal Temirtau, the company that owns the mine, has reported that at the time of the explosion, there were 252 miners inside, and 208 of them have already been brought to the surface. The company suspects that the explosion was triggered by a gas-methane blast.
In response to the tragedy, the country has declared a national day of mourning on Oct. 29.
Kazakhstan’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has directed the government to halt investment cooperation with ArselorMittal Temirtau. Furthermore, a government commission has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.
