‘20th Century Women’ With Annette Bening Gets Centerpiece Bow at 2016 New York Film Festival
“20th Century Women,” the new film by Mike Mills (“Beginners”) starring Annette Bening, has positioned itself for a run at awards season with a world premiere as the centerpiece screening of the 2016 New York Film Festival.
Bening, Greta Gerwig, Elle Fanning, Billy Crudup and newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann star in a story about a woman (Bening) raising her teenage son (Zumann) in a shared household in 1970s Santa Barbara. The film is written and directed by Mills, whose last film, “Beginners,” won its star Christopher Plummer a 2012 Academy Award.
Earlier this year A24 picked up “20th Century Women” for a December release. A gala screening at NYFF, the tightly curated festival presented by Film Society of Lincoln Center, gives the film a high-profile head start on attracting awards-season buzz. Megan Ellison of Annapurna Films, Anne Carey of Archer Gray and Youree Henley produce.
“20th Century Women” is the second title set for this year’s NYFF, following the announcement of the opening night film, Ava DuVernay documentary “The 13th.” The festival’s full main slate, which usually tallies between 25 and 30 films, is due to be announced next month.
“20th Century Women” will screen in a gala presentation Oct. 8. The 54th annual New York Film Festival runs Sept. 30-Oct. 16.
