2016 Summer Movies Are Bigger Than Last Year’s

If you thought this summer’s movies were underwhelming, think again because they’ve made more than 2015′s.

Depending on your point of view, 2016′s summer of blockbusters can be described as a number of things, with titles like ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’, ‘Jason Bourne’, ‘Star Trek Beyond’, ‘Suicide Squad’, ‘The BFG’, ‘Ghostbusters’, and ‘Finding Dory’ pleasing movie goers to varying degrees as well as being divisive with critics.

But despite a wobbly release of what can be described as good quality film-making, box office takings don’t appear to have suffered. Considering 2015 saw massive hits such as ‘Jurassic World’ and ‘Inside Out’ grace the big screen.

Over at comScore, the numbers have been tallied and, according to The Wrap, 108 days after the first Friday in May 2016 summer films are ahead of 2015′s but only narrowly.

Ticket sales in the US are up 2.84%, which might not sound a lot but considering how quickly ‘Jurassic World’ reached $1 billion, this year’s slower accumulation are still doing good business. Annual box office takings are up nearly 5%, which is largely down to a few big-hitters from the likes of Disney and Marvel, not to mention some consistent numbers from Warner Bros. too.

So far, 2016 summer movies (over a 16 week period) have amassed slightly more than last year domestically (as you can see below), but in the worldwide scale, ‘Civil War’ and ‘Finding Dory’ have made $1.2 billion and $929 million, respectively.

‘Suicide Squad’, for example, has done solid business, especially for an August release which is now often seen as a bit of a deadzone for studio releases. Despite a plethora of negative reviews, it’s taken over $282 million domestically, and $635 million worldwide.

The big studios admittedly showed their audience pulling power, even if the output across the summer months didn’t please everyone.

What the figures do show is that, regardless what the critics tell us, film lovers will still flock to the cinema to see what it’s like for themselves.
