What to Know Before Watching the Golden Globes

We can't wait to tune in to the Golden Globe Awards each year to see which of our favorite celebs are honored for their impressive work in film and television. Though much of the show remains the same each go-around, some interesting surprises have popped up throughout the awards' storied past. Read on to brush up on the history and odd happenings involved before you tune in for the 76th annual celebration.

It was hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's predecessor, the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association, and saw its "Best Film" title go to The Song of Bernadette.

The drinks keep flowing throughout the show, and there's no shortage of champagne. A few years back, it was reported that there were 400 bottles of Moët & Chandon on hand to keep guests' glasses filled while at their tables.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association rolls out 30,000 square feet of red carpet for each Golden Globes ceremony.

The award, named after the established director, was created in 1952 to celebrate “outstanding contribution to the entertainment field,” and has since been awarded to stars including Steven Spielberg, Judy Garland and Oprah Winfrey.

From 1958 until 1963, The Golden Globes were only locally televised, and the rest of the country missed out on winners such as Tony Curtis, The Defiant Ones, and Jayne Mansfield.

Originally, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association were tasked with handing out the awards. That changed in 1958 when Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin invited themselves on stage to take over hosting duties, and the ritual of stars announcing each award stuck.

Elvis on Tour and Walls of Fire were among the winners of the short-lived award, which existed for a short period from 1973 to 1977.

Ricky Schroder became the youngest Golden Globe winner when he was named "New Star of the Year" for his role as T.J. in 1979's The Champ. Schroder was nominated again, but did not win in 1990.

Sigourney Weaver, Jodie Foster, and Shirley MacLaine all shared the title of "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama," even though they starred in three separate films.

No wonder Hollywood stars are in such good shape! The mounted globes measure 10.75 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide.

And they're estimated to cost around $800 to make. No wonder the winners are so happy! The awards are getting a slight makeover for the 2019 show - the original square, marble base will now be round and made of brass and bronze.

Jessica Tandy won "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy" in 1990 for her role in Driving Miss Daisy. Tandy was nominated twice, for two different works, in 1992.

After winning "Best Actor" for his role in the television miniseries Don King: Only in America, Ving Rhames handed the Golden Globe over to his fellow 1998 nominee, Jack Lemmon.

In solidarity with the Writers Guild of America, which was on strike, actors refused to attend the 2008 Golden Globes.

While accepting the "Cecil B. DeMille Award" for lifetime achievement, Nicholson pretended to de-pants as part of his thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The "Best Animated Feature Film" category was a late addition, with Cars winning the very first award. The sequel, Cars 2, was also nominated in 2012.

Not including the Rat Pack, there's Andy Williams, John Larroquette, Janine Turner, Ricky Gervais, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers. Williams, Gervais, Poehler, and Fey all hosted multiple times.

She won "Best Actress" in 2014 for her role as Leslie Knope in "Parks and Rec."

That's 14 in film and 11 in television. So yeah, it's a long night, but a joyous one, too.
