Natalie Portman as Jane Foster
Portman appeared as the astrophysicist in the first two Thor movies but she was only mentioned in Ragnarok to confirm she and the Asgardian god had split up. During filming 2013’s The Dark World, it was reported that Portman was unhappy with the way she was treated by Marvel behind-the-scenes, but since Kevin Feige has taken control she has shown an interest in returning as Jane. The Russo Brothers also hinted the character might feature in Endgame because they said it was a potential spoiler to reveal if she survived the Snap or not.

Ed Norton as Bruce Banner
Norton played Banner in Louis Leterrier’s 2008 The Incredible Hulk but it didn’t do as well at the box office at the studio hoped. There were also reports of creative differences between the actor, Leterrier and Marvel Studios as to why Mark Ruffalo was recast as Banner. Norton says it was more to do with him not wanting to give up so much time to make these movies.

Liv Tyler as Betty Ross
Tyler played fellow scientist and Banner’s love interest in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk but while Betty’s dad, General Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) has appeared in several films since she has not.

Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis
Dennings’ seriously underqualified intern to Jane Foster was last seen in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, having herself got her own intern. It’s unclear if she survived the Snap but as she was a fan favourite, here’s hoping Darcy makes a comeback.

Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/Abomination
The main villain in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, Roth’s character is captured, placed in a cryogenically frozen state and kept at SHIELD’s secret facility, The Vault, in Alaska. He does get a mention in Agents of SHIELD when Coulson threatens one of his team with reassigning them to guard Blonsky’s cell.

Damion Poitier as Thanos
Before Josh Brolin was cast as the Mad Titan, Poitier played the role, albeit briefly, for the end credit scene of The Avengers.

Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery
Kingsley’s jobbing actor was hired to play the role of the Mandarin by Guy Pearce’s Killian in 2013’s Iron Man 3 and his scene with Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark is one of the best in the whole film. He reprised his role for a one-shot Hail the King where he was visited by an agent of the real Mandarin at Seagate prison. It’s unclear if the character is alive or dead.

Glenn Close as Irani Rael
Close played the Nova Corps commander in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy but he along with the rest of Xandar are presumed dead after Thanos paid them a visit and destroyed the planet in pursuit of the Power Stone.

Claudia Kim as Helen Cho
Kim played the geneticist in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and by the movie’s end she was released from Ultron’s power and very much alive though it’s unclear if she survived the Snap.

Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter
VanCamp was last seen as the younger Agent Carter in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War where she was now working for the CIA and assisting Steve Rogers. They shared an awkward kiss, which many fans weren’t impressed by (WHAT ABOUT YOUR AUNT PEGGY?), but she failed to make the final cut for Infinity War. Will she get a final onscreen moment with Cap in Endgame? Who knows.

Jaimie Alexander as Sif
Alexander has played the Asgardian warrior since 2011’s Thor and appeared in its sequel as well as episodes of Agents of SHIELD. She couldn’t reprise her role in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok because of a shooting conflict with her show Blindspot.

Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer
Rockwell played the CEO of Hammer Industries in2010’s Iron Man 2 who illegally hired Ivan Vanko to recreate Stark’s Iron Man suits but got more than he bargained for with the mad Russian. Hammer was incarcerated at Seagate Prison for his involvement in Vanko’s criminal activities and was last mentioned in Luke Cage.

Josh Dallas as Fandral
Dallas played the Asgardian warrior in the 2011’s Thor movie but he had to step down from the role because of his commitment to ABC’s Once Upon a Time. He was replaced by Zachary Levi who has since gone on to play DC’s Shazam!, and Fandral got unceremoniously killed off in Thor: Ragnarok.

Leslie Bibb as Christine Everhart
Bibb played the Vanity Fair journalist in 2008’s Iron Man and reprised her role in 2010’s Iron Man 2. She later came back as Everhart for a web series as part of the promotional campaign for 2015’s Ant-Man where the character was now an anchor for the WHiH Newsfront show who interviewed characters from the Paul Rudd film.

Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig
Skarsgård has appeared as the astrophysicist in 2011’s Thor, 2012’s The Avengers, 2013’s Thor: The Dark World but 2016’s Age of Ultron was the last we saw of him on screen. He was recruited to work at the Avengers Facility but according to the Endgame trailer, he was a victim of Thanos’ decimation.

Terrence Howard as James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes
Howard originated the role of Rhodey in the 2008 Iron Man film and was instrumental in Robert Downey Jr. getting hired for the lead role. However, he was offered less money for the sequel, and Downey more, so contract negotiations broke down and he was replaced by Don Cheadle.

Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns
Nelson played the cellular biologist in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk who was helping to find a cure for Bruce Banner but ended up causing Emil Blonsky to turn into the Abomination after giving him the temporary antidote to Bruce’s condition. His character was affected by Bruce Banner’s blood in an open wound on his head, which in the comics is how he becomes The Leader. In new MCU comic book issues it was revealed Sterns was taken into SHIELD custody by Black Widow.
Avengers: Endgame is the 22nd movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it will feature plenty of characters from across the films.
The latest instalment will provide a “definitive conclusion” to some narrative arcs, namely for the original Avengers, but some characters never got a chance to see what comes next in the MCU – some actors too.
So here’s a reminder of some of the Marvel stars that have become a distant memory.
