11 events to go to this weekend (24 to 26 Feb)

Just when you’ve barely recovered from the events last week, this weekend brings some of the best artistes, activities and events to Singapore. Buckle up for some Muay Thai action, sing your hearts out along with Guns N’ Roses, or celebrate the festival of colours as you dance to hip Bollywood tunes by the beach.

1. Guns N’ Roses Live in Singapore

Possibly the highlight of the weekend, or some may say the year, American rock legends Guns N’ Roses will be playing in Singapore, for the first time ever. Part of their Not in This Lifetime Tour, the hit 80s and 90s sensation is set to take Changi Exhibition Centre by storm.

The reunion will see the founding members Axl Rose, Slash and Duff Mckagan alongside Dizzy Reed, regrouping for one of the year’s most anticipated world tours. Also sharing the stage with the band are Aussie hard rock outfit Wolfmother and Nashville rock band Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown.

2. Chang Urban Pulse

Touting Thailand’s street culture, Chang Urban Pulses’ highlights include break-dancing, beat-boxing, rapping, and the headliner of the night, Thailand’s world-renowned martial art form, Muay Thai.

Bringing the raw energy from the bustling streets of Thailand, Chang Urban Pulse is ideal for the adventurous crowd who prefer some off-beat entertainment. Witness the grit of the Thai fighters as they take on local opponents, be amazed by abilities of the dancers, or rap alongside the beatboxers as they entertain you.

The event is making its debut here before moving to Vietnam, and is invite-only but members of the public can reserve a spot here.

3. Yiruma Live in Singapore

The Korean contemporary classical composer and pianist is coming back to Singapore once again, after having performed sold out concerts in 2014 and 2015. The name behind hit songs such as River Flows in You, Kiss the Rain, Love Me, and May Be, Yiruma combines melodious compositions with emotions in a unique yet moving way. This soulful concert serves as the perfect date plan for post Valentine’s Day celebrations.

4. Urban Animal Farm 2017

Organised by Costa Ris Animal Welfare League (CRAWL), the event features dogs, cats and rabbits which are up for adoption. Animal lovers can unite for day filled with fun, laughter, activities, and of course, adorable pets looking for a new home. The first 10 adopters will also receive a goodie bag each. Fret not if you are not able to commit to these furry playmates just yet, as there will be booths and contests to get everyone involved.

5. Diving Resort Travel Expo 2017

If you prefer sea critters rather than fluffy cats/dogs/rabbits, this is the might be the perfect alternative. Get below the surface of the ocean and discover a whole new world of wonders. The event features presentations and workshops by the industry professionals, stage entertainment, a kids zone, virtual reality experiences and even a fashion show. Planning a holiday in the deep blue sea? This event might be the perfect place to start, as it also plays host to travel experts who may be able to advise you on your escapades.

6. EcoBank Bazaar: Be a Zero Waste Hero

Back for its second run, this charity event is aimed at recycling and reducing waster while also giving back to society. Preloved clothes, toys, accessories and books that have been donated by generous individuals will be up for sale, and the proceeds will be donated to the Children’s Charities Association (CCA). Besides giving some items a new lease of life, the event also features fun activities and performances to engage the entire family.

7. Holi @ Wavehouse Sentosa

Although Holi may be a Hindu spring festival, in recent years it’s been popularised across countries around the globe, one of them being Singapore. The island will play host to several Holi events throughout the next couple of months, starting with this. An annual occurrence at Wavehouse since 2012, the event this year features rhythmic percussion beats, live band performances, DJ sets, water jets and loads and loads of colour. The perfect recipe for a beach celebration.

Previous instalments of the event saw a turnout of thousands, so be prepared for an atmosphere filled with colours, music, laughter, and of course, love.

8. Terry Fox Run Singapore

The heroic endeavour of Terry Fox in the 1980s, where he attempted to run across Canada in an attempt to raise funds for cancer research, is still fresh in the minds of many. Although Terry passed on amidst his efforts, his legacy continues to inspire many. The annual Terry Fox Run aims to raise funds for local cancer research. Featuring two fun-run categories, 5km and 10km, run for a cause this weekend while getting in shape. The volunteer-led run goes by the motto that this is not a run against one another, but rather against cancer as a society.

9. Hyderate x SO Sofitel – Pool Party

10. Latin Fiesta

Back for the second month, Latin Fiesta promises a night of dance, with Bachata Classes to kick off the night. There is a beginner class to the cater to those just starting out and a movement and musicality class after. Get your Latin groove on and dance to the tunes of DJs Manu, Roger and May May late into the night. Entrance to the event is free, but drinks are not.

11. SCUFF 2017

A fan of underground films and the not-so-mainstream creations? The Singapore Cult & Underground Film Festival (SCUFF) might just be your thing. Back once again, SCUFF’s range this year covers a mix of old and new films, along with several genres from horror and prison action to blaxploitation and even a documentary on Iggy Pop.
