Shiona Turini, stylist/consultant My mother used to wear stacks of gold bangles up her arm, and they would make the most beautiful sound when they clashed together. She gave me my first set of engraved gold bangles when I was a teenager, and then I inherited a set of hers a few years ago. I never take the four bracelets off. I feel incomplete without them. I’m not sure where she got them, but they are definitely from the Caribbean. I’m from Bermuda, and sometimes I’ll meet older Caribbean women and they automatically know I’m from an island. The gold is darker, richer. And the carvings are unique to styles that originated from the Caribbean.

For some ladies, diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But for these stylish women, their favorite piece of jewelry has nothing to do with the size of the rock or the bling factor. Instead, what they find most precious about a certain ring or a pile of bangles is the meaning behind it. Whether it was a gift from a husband or a family heirloom passed down that reminds them of a certain person in their life, the pieces here have priceless sentimental value.
