10 of Joe and Jill Biden's sweetest inauguration moments

Joe and Jill Biden first met through a blind date set up by the president's brother in March 1975. He was nine years her senior, which she told her mother made him more of a "gentleman". She would turn his marriage proposals down five times, out of caution and love towards his two sons from his previous marriage. Two years later the couple got married. She took a career break from teaching to help raise the boys, and in 1981 she gave birth to their daughter, Ashley.

They have remained at one another's sides ever since though tragedy (their son Beau died of cancer, aged just 45) and grave sickness (Joe Biden had two aneurysms in the late '80s). Today, the couple remain as in love as ever and the now president regularly praises his wife for her strength and kindness. Throughout the inauguration, Joe and Jill looked to be perfect partners, holding hands, kissing and embracing.

"I adore her. I'm gonna sound so stupid — I was saying the other day, when she comes down the steps and I look at her, my heart still skips a beat," Joe told CBS.

"What Jill is best at helping me do is figure out who the people around me would be most compatible with me," he told CBS. "She knows me better than I know me."

“She never gives herself much credit, but the truth is she's the strongest person I know. She has a backbone like a ramrod. She loves fiercely, cares deeply. Nothing stops her when she sets her mind to getting something right,” he said, according to CNN.

"We have had our hearts wrung and broken. But the only place we are safe from all the dangers of love is hell," Jill wrote in her book, Where the Light Enters. "And one thing in my life has stayed the same: Joe and I have always had each other."

“Good marriages push us—not to become someone else but to become the best version of ourselves," said Jill in Where the Light Enters.

"Joe is a father. A grandfather. A brother. A husband. A partner. We need leadership that looks out for us, the way Joe looks out for his family," said Jill on Instagram.

“Rules for Happiness: something to do, someone to love, something to hope for," wrote Joe Biden in his book, Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose.

"When we married, I had my own dreams and ambitions and Joe didn’t love me in spite of that, but because of it," said Jill via Instagram. "@joebiden, thank you for cheering me on every step of my career and for being an incredible partner on this journey."

“This is the truest thing I know: that love makes a family whole," said Jill in Where the Light Enters. "It doesn't matter if you're blending a family with biological and nonbiological children, or healing the wounds of losing a loved one, or inviting an aging parent to live with you. The details may differ, but love is the common denominator.”

"I love you, Jilly, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have you with me on the journey ahead," wrote Joe on Instagram.
