The news that the Government is planning to all-but remove the amber list for British holidaymakers who have had both their jabs has been greeted with a tentative optimism.

Tentative why? Well, for one, the Government has far from confirmed the plan, when it will be introduced, how and where. And for two, there is a nagging concern that UK travellers have missed the boat on Europe this summer anyway.

Such has been the chaos overseen by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps et al in resuming international travel, the EU has booked its trips, packed its bags and hit the beach while we’re still languishing in our living rooms.

I don’t say this to hurt you, but there are currently Germans, Belgians and more sunning themselves on the shores of Majorca, and we’re possibly weeks away from joining them.

But don’t panic, because there is no shortage of holidays to be booked. To assuage the fears of the dormant British holidaymaker, we have rounded up some of the best options for travel later this summer, on a budget of £2,000 for a couple, when, if you believe the hype, we will all be free to travel to much of Europe without the need to quarantine on return.

The below prices are per person based on two sharing and include flights unless otherwise stated. Check with the provider for the most up to date availability and pricing.

Madeira

Tui, Europe’s largest tour operator, is offering seven nights all-inclusive in Canico de Baixo at the 4T+ (think four stars and then some) Hotel Riu Palace from £839 per person. Flights depart to the Portuguese island from Birmingham in August, and the price includes transfers.

Tenerife

The operator is also selling seven nights to the Costa Adeje in Tenerife at the adult-only 5T (!) Guayarmina Princess Hotel on a half-board basis from £899 per person, including flights and transfers, and departing from Bristol in August.

Algarve

Trailfinders has the five-star Tivoli Carvoeiro on its books and is offering seven nights bed and breakfast from £779 per person including transfers, when travelling in October. There is also a 10 per cent discount if you book before the end of June.

Corfu

Explore is running a 'Walking the Corfu Trail' hiking holiday around the south of the island, from £775 per person, excluding flights (£1,010 including). The operator says guests will visit sleepy vineyard villages and enjoy home-cooked food in local tavernas.

Majorca

British Airways Holidays, the tour operator arm of the airline, is offering seven nights at the five-star Zafiro Palace Alcudia on the Spanish island, from £839 per person, for travel in September.

Croatia

The company is also selling seven nights at the five-star Hotel Croatia Cavtat, near Dubrovnik, from £479 per person for stays in September, when booked before the end of June.

Kos

The reborn Thomas Cook is offering a trip for two to the Greek island, all-inclusive, for £1,800. You will stay at the four-star Mitsis Family Village near Kardamena beach, departing London Gatwick at the end of August.

Rhodes

Another Greek island, Rhodes is on the receiving end of a £999 per person offer from Flight Centre, with guests staying at the five-star Atrium Palace Thalasso Spa Resort on a bed and breakfast basis. The price is valid for travel in August, September and October.

Also on Rhodes is the four-star Lindos Royal. Hays Travel is offering seven nights there with Jet2 Holidays from £615 per person.
