There Is 1 Crucial Difference Between How Men and Women Use Tinder

If you're having a frustratingly hard time finding success on Tinder, it's not just because dating sucks the big one and should be avoided at all costs. Researchers at Queen Mary University of London, Sapienza University of Rome, and Royal Ottawa Health Care Group found a scientific reason that using the mobile dating app can be so infuriating, and it comes down to the fact that men and women have vastly different methods when they use it.

In a study conducted by Gareth Tyson, Vasile C. Perta, Hamed Haddadi, and Michael C. Seto, the researches created 14 fake Tinder profiles of men and women and released them into the ether of New York and London. Much like real users in a desperate dry spell, the fake profiles swiped right (aka, gave a profile the thumbs up) on everyone.

While researchers observed the profiles, they tallied up the number of matches made by each gender and found that men swipe right far more than women. The fake men only matched with other users 0.6 percent of the time, whereas the fake women matched 10.5 percent of the time. This indicates that women are far more discerning when it comes to choosing their matches, whereas men are game for pretty much whatever comes their way.

One theory for why this is the case could be something researchers call a "feedback loop." When men see that they aren't matching as much, they become less choosy in hopes that this will increase their chances. When women become inundated with matches, they realize they can afford to be more picky.

Because of this, a woman could match with a carefully selected partner who barely gave her more than three seconds of time before swiping. The chances of two people actually being on the same page when they match is dishearteningly slim.

To combat this, users could turn to other dating apps that don't rely on the concept of "matching." The only surefire way to avoid disappointment, however, is to give it all up and adopt a cat. At least that's cold indifference you signed up for.
