This 1,200-foot Bridge Has a Glass Bottom That Makes You Feel Like You’re Walking on Air — and It's One of the Best Places to See Fall Foliage
The SkyBridge Michigan is the world's longest timber-towered suspension bridge.
The world's longest timber-towered suspension bridge doesn’t connect two cities or buildings — it connects two mountain peaks.
The impressive accolade belongs to the SkyBridge Michigan, a pedestrian bridge that spans 1,200 feet between McLouth and Disciples Ridge peaks in Northern Michigan. The suspension bridge is part of the Boyne Mountain Resort, a year-round playground with 415 skiable acres and Michigan's largest indoor waterpark.
The SkyBridge, which opened in late 2022, can be enjoyed year-round but is best visited in the fall when it provides a unique vantage point for leaf peepers. Rather than viewing the fall colors from the confines of your car, at SkyBridge Michigan you’ll be treated to a bird’s eye view of the colorful forest below and around you. The five-foot-wide SkyBridge floats 118 feet off the ground and hangs over Boyne Valley, which turns into a kaleidoscope of red, yellow, and orange each fall. From the bridge, you can also look out over the tree-covered hills of Northern Michigan.
For unobstructed views of the valley floor directly below you, pause in the middle of the SkyBridge, which has a 36-foot span of glass flooring that makes it feel as though you’re walking on air.
In addition, this year the bridge is hosting a Yoga in the Sky experience every Saturday and Sunday from Sept. 7 to Oct. 6. During Yoga in the Sky, participants will not only get the chance to practice yoga on the sky bridge (over 100 feet off the ground), but will enjoy a guided hike up Boyne Mountain. The experience is catered to all levels of yogis and hikers and includes full-day access to SkyBridge Michigan. Yoga in the Sky takes place between 8 and 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and costs $45 per person.
Tickets to SkyBridge Michigan (sans yoga) start at $25 per person for all-day access to both the bridge and Boyne Mountain’s scenic two-person chairlift. For an extended fall experience, you can ride the chairlift up to the SkyBridge and walk along it first thing in the morning. On the other side of the bridge, you can enjoy a picnic. There are also lawn games, seating, bathrooms, and a food truck located on Disciples Overlook and food at the Eagle’s Nest restaurant.
No matter how you spend your day, you can end it with a walk back across the bridge during golden hour, the perfect time to capture Michigan’s fall splendor.
It’s worth noting that wheelchairs and other mobility equipment are not allowed on SkyBridge Michigan due to the dynamics of a suspension bridge. However, visitors who can stand for a short period can ride the scenic chair lift up the mountain and wheelchairs are available, without charge, at the top.
